You can buy KTX tickets as a visitor. The hard part is often the payment step: a foreign Visa or Mastercard sometimes fails on KorailTalk or the web checkout with a silent decline, a spinner, or a blank screen. That does not mean the train is sold out.
This guide is about what to try next — not a pop-up list, and not invented fees. Confirm live rules on Korail and VisitKorea before you pay.
Official channels first
VisitKorea lists Let’s Korail (web) and the KorailTalk app as the official places to reserve and pay for Korail trains, including KTX. The English Let’s Korail help pages also note: tickets go on sale up to one month ahead, and you cannot reserve a train leaving in 20 minutes or less.
If the phone app rejects your card, switch to a laptop browser on the English Korail booking site and try again once. Use Chrome if you can. Match the passenger name to the card name. Do not hammer the same failed charge — your bank may freeze the card.
When the app or web still says no
Station counter. VisitKorea’s transportation guide states that AREX, KTX, and SRT ticket machines and counters accept foreign-issued credit cards. Bring your passport. Counters at big hubs (Seoul, Yongsan, Busan) are the safest same-day backup. Seats can sell out before you arrive — book early when you can.
Korail Pass. VisitKorea notes that non-Korean citizens who will ride a lot can buy a Korail Pass on the Let’s Korail site, through designated agencies, or at Korail tourist centers in Seoul, Yongsan, and Busan Stations. After you have the pass, you still reserve seats for each ride. Pass prices and day options change — check the live pass page; do not guess the fare here.
Resellers. Some travelers use global OTAs that connect to Korail inventory. Those sites often clear international cards more easily. They may add a service fee or different refund rules — treat any markup as live, not a fixed number in this post.
Practical checklist
- Enable overseas online payments with your bank before checkout.
- Try desktop English Let’s Korail once if the app fails.
- If payment fails twice, stop and use a counter or another channel.
- Peak weekends and Chuseok sell out early — reserve as soon as the one-month window opens.
- Keep the confirmation or mobile ticket; refund rules differ by how close you are to departure (see Let’s Korail refund tables).
